Dr. Michael Parenti passed away yesterday. He was a towering figure in Political Science, always eclectic, always clear-sighted, always indignant at the thought of injustice. His body of work includes at least a dozen books, dozens of lectures and countless articles. Blackshirts and Reds is perhaps my favourite book of his, an analysis of the relationship between the main ideologies of the 20th Century that pulls no punches in regards to the filth that is fascism. For his lectures, I can do no better than recommend his legendary “Yellow” Lecture, a lecture on the neocolonial domination of the third world whose main recording on YouTube had a yellow tint applied to it, thus: the “Yellow” Lecture. We have since developed technology to remove this tinting and you can now watch it colour-corrected and in-full at the link in the “External Links” section at the bottom of this page. It is Parenti at his best: gesticulating, grappling with the microphone, intoning every word with such meaning that the crowd follows him every step of the way through the shocks and laughs. Dr. Michael Parenti will be missed by more people than he would have thought. He lived a life where he refused to compromise his principles or his dedication to them. A towering figure of the 20th Century is now returned to the Earth. I hope he is at peace.
